New to elder care - Please help

  • My mom is in NYc She is 63.  I am her only child and live in ATL.  She has Scerloderma (hope I spelled it right)  and with it many complications.  SHe is on oxygen, has problems getting around the house, and dressing herself.  My grandmother has been basically looking after her.  I moved her 2 and 1/2 yrs ago with my husband and children hinking she would be moving here too but because of her sickness she has been unable to travel. I am trying to get help for her.  I am not well off financially but I know my mom needs assistance.  I am thinking of moving back to ny but i will still need to find someone to care for her.  i feel so guilty and depressed about leaving my mom and grandmother.

Do i give up my house and small business, move the kids and go back.  My husband wants nothing more than to go back to NYC but for the kids sake here is so much calmer.  What do I do??

  • Hi,

I know what you're going through. I have been looking for a caregiver for my Mom as well and hav efound noone as of yet. My Mom is in the Philippines right now where she is beign cared for by my niece and nephew because I have 2 little ones and I couldn't give her the utmost attention she needed. My husband and I aren't financially well off either so that's why we can't even begin to hire soemone from an agency. It's $240 per day for one of them to come and help and I can't afford that.

It's such a hard situation to be in.. but I hope for the BOTH of us, it will get better. :)

    Good Luck.

  • I am wondering if New York has a program which will pay a care taker to come to your mothers house.  I live in Washington state, my last client was eligible for state paid care through the Department of Social and Health Services.  It might be something for you to look into.  Good luck!  Blessed Be

  • I am new to this site and just saw your question.  I am professional Geriatric Care Manager and was wondering if you tried to find one close to your mother in New York.  There is a site for National Assoc. of Geriatric Care Managers that may be able to help guide you.  Also if your mom was married to a veteran or a veteran herself and served during a war she would be entitled to financial assistance.  If you would like more info contact me back 6103907531, would be able to guide you in the right direction.

  • Dear SWA508,

It has been awhile since your post. I hope you managed to find the help you needed for your mom and family. If not, I was thinking you might want to try Jewish Family Services in New York. You don't have to be Jewish to use their services. They have social workers and case managers who can help and they can make referrals to other agencies that might have resources you need. They operate on a sliding scale and no one is turned away for inability to pay. Here is their info: JBFCS, 120 West 57th St, New York, NY 10019, (212) 582-9100, Toll-free: 1-888-523-2769, admin@jbfcs.org

Please let us know how things are going.

    Best,

  • Help for you would be from hiring a personal attendent to accompany both you and her for her trip.  First apply for assistance to NYC there are several programs.  When you travel, make arrangements for the airline to have the oxygen tank ready for her on board.  Your not allowed to take the one from home.  there are portable tanks as small as a Back Pack.  You need to contact the medical supply outfit that provides her oxygen, they could possibly assist you with the entire transfer, once you get off the plane your family should be waitting for you and with the new assigned oxygen tank from your hometown.  I believe it would be beneficial to have a personal attendant to accompany you, because it takes 2 people to handle this trip.  You handle the traveling, the PA handles keeping moma off stress.

The number of the amount of oxygen is very, extremely very important.  While on the air, if the oxygen is too high, she could have a TIA, or a stroke.  So, sometimes whatever number is accostomed to at home on the ground level, it may be too high while flying.

Take it from experience.  You also can qualify to become your own mama's caregiver by the State.  It was signed into Federal Law about 10 years back.  go to your Social Services Depart.  You'll need her Birth Certificate, SSN, her Medicare Card.  And you'll try to see how many hours you'll be caring for her at home.  At the same time get to the Senior Center, or Elder Care in your town.  They would have a contact to get you, CHORES, and Medicare/Medicade will pay to have someone come bath/dress/feed/and light housekeeping at least 2 a week.

hope this helped you.  I'm a Care Coordinator in Anchorage, Alaska.  I usually care for Developmentaly Disabled, Dementia/ALZ and Chronic Pain clients.

    Hope I helped.
